Finding our newest matcha

Finding our newest matcha

As founders of a speciality matcha brand, we are dedicated to finding and sourcing the best matcha. Our new matcha Yugen, took us years of sampling and tasting to discover.

Our home was full of samples of all different kinds of matcha from across Japan. After months, of tasting matcha, speaking with farms and producers, we decided to take a trip to Japan to sample and taste matcha in person.

We started in the Uji area which is a town full of matcha products in everything and home to famous Japanese matcha producers. We also wanted to explore matcha tea from other regions and explored the neighbouring regions.

This included Ujitawara which is a rural mountain next to Uji. To get there you go through the luscious green hills on winding roads. It is famous for being the actual birthplace of modern Japanese green tea and thus has a long, illustrious history.

This is reflected in the farms in the area where the are multi-generational family farms who provide these teas.

The particular farm in which we sourced Yugen from is one of those multi-generational family farms. A beautiful, traditional Japanese setting hidden deep in the trees within Ujitawara run by son, father and grandfather. We were fortunate enough to  be served the tea on offer at this farm directly from the farjmer himself, who demonstrated the perfect brewing, storage and cultivation process for his matcha tea.

What we were struck by from the moment we tasted this matcha was how umami and smooth it was. Having understood more about the growing and cultivation process, we learnt that this has come from decades of knowledge on how to grow and care for the perfect matcha.

It was almost two years since, we found this matcha in Japan, after testing it in the UK and designing the packaging for it, we are now ready to sell this matcha from our website.
